WASHINGTON, July 28 (UPI) -- A pair of Purdue University students who gained headlines with their free compliments campaign are spreading the love in Washington as part of a sponsored tour...The compliment campaign was started by Westcott in early 2008, when he began standing in the same spot on campus every Wednesday holding a big sign and giving free compliments. He was soon joined by Brown, and the duo became known around campus as the "Compliment Guys." The pair's work toward the goal of nonstop niceness attracted national attention, including appearances on National Public Radio and "Good Morning America." Future politicians. You just know that.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government plans to increase funding to battle obesity and views healthcare reform as an opportunity to encourage better eating habits, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said on Tuesday. The Obama administration, as part of its economic stimulus package, will give states and local governments more money to control obesity, including investing in public transportation, Sebelius told an obesity conference in Washington. How does investing in public transportation reduce obesity? Do people eat more Twinkies in their cars?
TUESDAY, JULY 28, 2009 CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 27 (UPI) -- A Seattle man said he was arrested at a Charlotte, N.C., airport and detained as an Army deserter, even though he has never been in the military. Chris Parks, 27, said he was returning from Central America with some friends when his name caught the attention of Homeland Security workers at the airport, KOMO-TV, Seattle, reported Monday. Parks said he was told he'd been flagged as a deserter. Obviously, a major mixup. But just be grateful this wasn't Henry Louis Gates of Harvard. Can you imagine? Can you just imagine?
ROME (Reuters) - Two Swedes expecting the golden beaches of the Italian island of Capri got a shock when tourist officials told them they were 650 km (400 miles) off course in the northern town of Carpi, after mistyping the name in their GPS. "It's hard to understand how they managed it. I mean, Capri is an island," said Giovanni Medici, a spokesman for Carpi regional government, told Reuters Tuesday. "It's the first time something like this has happened." Oh, it's okay. In Sweden they're taught that all cultures, places and things are of equal value, so what's 400 miles? Besides, correct spelling is such a middle-class idea.
